Omicron and Coronavirus News: Covid-19 infections are expected to increase significantly in India in the coming weeks under the leadership of the Omicron variant, with some variants saying that this variant is already in community transmission and more patients are appearing despite the decline in hospitals have cases in major cities.

In the last 24 hours,3,06,064 new infections were reported in the country, an increase of 8% over the average daily number of cases reported in the last four days, the health ministry said. The death toll was 439, the lowest in five days.

However, weekly positivity rates for the week from December 27 to January 24 increased to 17.03%, up from 0.63% over the highest circulating Omicron variant.

"Omicron now dominates community transmission and multiple metros in India," the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) said in a report released on Sunday, January 10th.

Most of the cases in the Omicron variant are mild, but the number of cases in hospital admissions and intensive care is increasing, the advisory team said.

The number of cases has dropped significantly in the last two weeks in major cities like Indian Capital, Delhi and major financial cities like Mumbai, the financial hub of Maharashtra.

Dr. Subhash Salunke, a member of the government-run Indian Council of Medical Research and a member of the National Task Force on Covid, said that as diversity expands to semi-urban and rural areas, that may change. Dr. Salunke, who had earlier advised the Maharashtra government, said the state could see multiple peaks in the next eight to 10 weeks.

"The number of cases in cities like Mumbai and Pune is the tip of the iceberg," Dr. Salunke told Reuters, adding that a malignant delta variant was also circulating from the previous wave.

The country’s total number of infections reached 39.54 million, the second highest in the world after the United States. The virus has killed 489,848 people in the country.
