With some relief, Mumbai saw a 3 per cent drop in daily Covid-19 cases on Saturday, registering 20,318 cases in 24 hours. However, there is a slight decrease in the daily positive rate.

Of the 72,442 tests conducted in Mumbai on Friday, 20,971 cases were registered, with a positive case rate of 28.9 per cent, according to BMC data. On Saturday, 71,019 tests were performed and the case positivity rate was 28.6 percent.

In Maharashtra, there were 41,434 new cases and 13 deaths related to Covid-19. Also, on Saturday, 133 patients were found to be infected with the Omicron variant - 118 patients from Pune and one from Mumbai.

On January 4, Mumbai saw a 33.7 per cent increase with 10,606 latest cases, up from 7,928 the day before. The next day, it rose to 15,014, the highest single-day surge since expanding in March 2020 - 41.56 percent. Mumbai had the highest number of 11,000 cases last April.

With the increase in cases, BMC increased its daily test numbers from an average of 40,000 to 65,000 per day.

On Saturday, in new cases, 82 percent (16,661) of patients were asymptomatic. While 1,257 patients were hospitalized, only 108 needed oxygen beds.

Sharing data on the number of beds available for Covid-19 patients, the BMC urged people not to panic and be careful. Of the 33,803 beds available, 21.4 percent are currently occupied.

Mayor Kishori Pednekar visited the Covid-19 Jumbo Center at the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) this morning. "Of the 2,500 beds in the BKC center, about 900 beds were occupied ... of which about 670 patients were asymptomatic and not a single ICU bed was occupied."

People are being asked to be careful, "the number of people being admitted to hospitals is low, so lockdowns are not being imposed under the current circumstances." She had previously said that if the daily Covid-19 cases exceeded 20,000, authorities would have to consider a lockdown.
