Corona Virus Updates: In the 24 hours ending at 8 am on Thursday, there were 67,084 new Covid-19 cases and 1,241 related deaths in India. As of Wednesday, the number of active accidents in the country had dropped from 8.92 lakh to 7,90,789. The daily positive rate also falls marginally to 4.44% from 4.54% on Thursday.

 

World Health Organization officials have warned that a new Covid-19 variant is more likely to arrive. On Tuesday, WHO Covid-19 technical lead Maria Van Kerkhove said the global health agency was tracking four different versions of Omicron. "Omicron is the latest version of the concern. It's not the latest version of the concern talking about the WHO. Then, you know, it's hopeful, it will take some time to get there. But with the severity of the outbreak, we really have other variations," she said.

West Bengal's Covid-19 number rose to 20,08,133 on Wednesday after 884 new infections, up from 148 the previous day, the health ministry said in its bulletin. It said 28 new deaths had been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 20,912.

Meanwhile, less than 500 Covid cases were registered in Mumbai on Wednesday. Two days after 356 cases were registered, it showed a slight increase in daily cases at 441. The death toll from the infection was also recorded at 9 Covid deaths on Wednesday.

Test positivity rate - the number of positive cases in the total tests conducted - dropped slightly from 1.29 per cent to 1.16 per cent on Tuesday. The daily test has dropped below 40,000 since the beginning of this month. The number of tests conducted in the city was 37,800.
