To prevent accidents in adverse weather conditions, Noida police have made it mandatory to use reflective tapes on vehicles. Police can impose a fine of Rs 10,000 if they find owners driving vehicles without glowing tapes. According to reports, the fine was defined under the Motor Vehicles Act.

As part of the initiative, Gautam Budh Nagar District Traffic Police recently installed reflective tapes on barricades and pillars on roads at the DND Flyway Toll Plaza.

Once upon a time in a toll plaza we saw fast moving vehicles colliding with dividers. Reflective tapes improve the visibility and safety of road users,” Gautam Budh nagar Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Ganesh Prasad Saha was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

The police made the decision to avoid accidents in foggy weather. Roads around Noida are notorious for accidents caused by poor visibility. Reflective tapes are designed to help drivers see even in low light and at night. These play an important role in alerting passengers when vehicle backlights are not working properly.

Noida traffic police volunteer Raghavendra Kumar said accidents were also occurring due to parking of vehicles on the road in foggy weather.

“People should not park their vehicles on the side of the road. The police should also act fast and remove such vehicles to prevent accidents,” Kumar told the Hindustan Times.

According to Gautam Budh nagar Traffic Police, 368 people will be killed in 798 accidents in 2021. 380 people died in 740 accidents a year ago. The number of people injured in accidents will be 504 in 2021 and 528 in 2020.

Rule 104 to 104D of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1989 mandated the installation of reflectors, reflective tapes and rear marking tapes as part of the Automotive Industry Standards 089 and ASI090 regulations.

Private two-wheelers and four-wheelers are fitted with rear reflectors in the factory, while commercial vehicles such as trucks and tractors are at risk due to the lack of such safety mechanisms.
