Protests erupted at Dammam airport after a Pakistani pilot refused to go any further as the shift ended after an emergency landing. However, only pilot regulations are being followed to ensure aviation safety.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has clarified that although the pilot's action has caused a great deal of controversy online, pilot’s need to rest properly after their shifts before traveling again.
PIA flight PK-9754 from Riyadh to Islamabad had to make an emergency stop in Dammam due to inclement weather.
Passengers at Dammam Airport are worried. They refused to disembark from the plane and airport security had to intervene to bring the situation under control. A PIA spokesman said all passengers were accommodated in hotels.
This is very important for flight safety, so the pilot needs rest. All passengers arrive at Islamabad Airport at 11pm. A Gulf News spokesman said all arrangements had been made at the hotels until then.
In November 2021, Pakistan announced that it was expanding its air operations to Saudi Arabia, the national carrier. The PIA has announced that flights will now depart from various cities in the country, including Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Peshawar.
Around the world, airlines are taking steps to combat pilot fatigue. In 2011, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) set a minimum rest period of 10 hours prior to flight duty. The rule is that the pilot must sleep continuously for eight hours during the 10-hour rest period.
